Role Overview

The Producing–Artistic Director is the organizational leader of Untitled Theater Company and this coming year will be a true reset. Untitled has operated under a consistent structure since its founding three years ago, but the current board is fully transitioning out, which means the incoming Producing–Artistic Director will be the first new organizational leader. In practice, you are inheriting a functioning platform (brand, resources, funding pathways, and a production track record) with the authority to reshape it: you can preserve what works, redesign the structure, shift the mission, and set an entirely new artistic and organizational direction.

This role comes with a new type of responsibility for a student-led theater company. You’ll have a chance to shape what theater-making can look like at UC Berkeley, both artistically and culturally, by producing ambitious work, enacting social change, building leadership teams, managing budgets and systems, and creating an environment where people can do their best work.

If you want the freedom to build the kind of organization you wish existed, this is that opportunity.

Core Responsibilities

  • Lead the board’s annual planning and set a clear artistic + operational vision for the year (including the freedom to reshape Untitled’s structure, mission focus, and programming).

  • Run weekly board meetings: set agendas, facilitate check-ins, align priorities, and keep projects moving.

  • Oversee the fall show (Act One winner) with a lighter production workload than spring; maintain the support structure so the project is well-resourced and on track.

  • Produce and production manage the spring show (typically larger scale): timeline, staffing plan, logistics, venues, contracts, schedules, and risk management, or out-source producing to new applicant at your discretion.

  • Lead the spring show selection process (board-decided, but you drive the structure of decision-making and follow-through).

  • Lead hiring cycles across the organization: board roles, show leadership, and key production positions; coordinate interviews with board members.

  • Build and manage the yearly budget across all Untitled programming (fall + spring productions, Act One, DeCal, and any independent projects).

  • Coordinate funding strategy with External Affairs (and others as needed): grants, sponsorships, donors, and institutional support.

  • Serve as a judge for the Act One Pitch Contest and help maintain fair, consistent evaluation practices year to year.

  • Maintain organizational standards: communication norms, documentation habits, and systems that make transitions smooth for future leadership.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Strong organizational/project-management habits and follow-through.

  • Comfort leading meetings and making high-stakes calls with a team.

  • Ability to communicate clearly under pressure and coordinate across many stakeholders.

Preferred (Most applicants won’t have any/all of these… Don’t worry! We’re more than willing to train the right person.)

  • Prior producing/production management experience (theater, live events, film, student orgs, etc.).

  • Budgeting experience (even informal), or demonstrated comfort with spreadsheets and constraints.

  • Experience fundraising, grant-writing, or building partnerships.
