Role Overview
Technical Director is responsible for Untitled’s technical backbone across the year: equipment, documentation, rentals, and the systems that let each show’s designers and crews succeed. You’ll maintain the inventory, coordinate rentals and purchases, and support production-specific teams (lighting, sound, scenic, projections) so each show can execute cleanly and safely.
Core Responsibilities
Maintain a clear inventory of Untitled technical equipment (including storage organization and check-out systems).
Keep technical documentation up to date (equipment lists, diagrams, manuals, wiring plans, and any recurring templates).
Coordinate rentals when needed: research, quotes, pickup/return logistics, and payment workflow.
Oversee the “technical assets” pipeline for each show: what’s owned, what must be rented, what must be built, and what’s feasible.
Collaborate with production-specific designers/leads (LD/SD/Scenic/etc.) to anticipate needs early and avoid last-minute crises.
Help plan tech budgets with the Producing–Artistic Director (and ensure purchases/rentals align with constraints).
Recommend new purchases when it creates long-term value for the company; manage assigned purchasing budget responsibly.
Establish basic standards for safe use, storage, and transport of equipment (and ensure crews know them).
Support build/load-in/tech logistics as needed (especially when equipment is shared across projects).
Maintain a simple tech-rental/payment system for lending equipment (if Untitled rents/lends to others) and track all returns.
Archive tech learnings after each show (what broke, what worked, what should be upgraded next).
Qualifications
Required:
Strong organization and reliability; comfort being the “systems person.”
Ability to coordinate logistics and communicate clearly with designers/crew.
Willingness to learn technical concepts quickly (even if you’re not an expert yet).
Proficient Experience with at least one area of theater tech (lighting, sound, scenic, projections, stage management for tech, etc.).
Preferred (Most applicants won’t have any/all of these… Don’t worry! We’re more than willing to train the right person.)
Experience managing equipment inventory, rentals, or production logistics.
Basic familiarity with power, cabling, and safe equipment handling (or strong willingness to learn).
